This market report summarizes the results of HTStec’s industry–wide global web-based benchmarking survey on genetic variation analysis (DNA extraction and SNP genotyping) carried out in October 2008. The main objectives were to comprehensively document current practices, preferences and trends in genetic variation analysis and to understand future user requirements, particularly with respect to the need for outsourced services. The survey looked at both the aspects of genetic variation analysis as practiced today and predictions for 2010. The areas covered, amongst others, included the types of genetic variance studied; the primary objectives of SNP genotyping work and species investigated; sample or tissue types used to extract DNA; how many extractions performed per year and the techniques used; cost of reagents per extraction; automation applied to DNA extraction; preferred SNP genotyping reagent vendors; how many samples and SNPs per sample analysed in house; budget allocated for in house genotyping and automation applied; interest in outsourcing and primary reasons to consider outsourcing; how many samples are outsourced and average price paid per single DNA extraction or SNP genotype outsourced.
